From January 1st, 2002, the new banknotes and coins went into legal course in all the countries of the European Union that are part of the Eurozone. Those countries are: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Monaco, The Netherlands, Portugal, San Marino, Spain and Vatican City.

  • New member countries (From May 01, 2004):

Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. 

  • Applicant countries:

Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey.

Enlargement Ceremony, 1 May.
The Irish Presidency of the European Union will stage a ceremony in Dublin to mark the historic enlargement, attended by the Heads of State and Government of all 25 EU Member States.

Saturday May 1 will mark one of the most important days in recent European history. The accession of ten new member states to the European Union signifies the re-unification of Europe and the ending of the artificial divisions of the last century.

Celebrations are taking place all over the continent to commemorate the biggest expansion in the history of the European Union, and to welcome Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia as new members of the European Union.
